Sri Lanka tea country — responsible travel with Elephant Travels

Responsible Travel

CSR & Sustainability

Responsible Sri Lanka travel shaped by local partnerships, community awareness, ethical wildlife choices, cultural respect, and practical sustainability.

Plan Your Trip

At Elephant Travels, responsible travel is not a separate idea from the journey. It is part of how each private Sri Lanka tour is planned, from the routes selected and guides recommended to the hotels, wildlife experiences, local communities, and cultural places included along the way.

Sri Lanka is a small island with extraordinary natural beauty, wildlife, history, and local hospitality. Tourism can bring real benefits when it supports local people, respects culture, protects nature, and avoids unnecessary pressure on sensitive places.

Elephant Travels continues to build its responsible travel approach through practical decisions, trusted local partnerships, and honest guidance for travellers.

Our Responsible Travel Approach

Local First Planning

We work with local drivers, guides, hotels, activity providers, and community-based partners where suitable, helping more tourism value stay within Sri Lanka.

Ethical Wildlife Choices

Wildlife experiences are planned with care. We avoid promising sightings, discourage harmful animal interactions, and prefer responsible safari operators and nature experiences.

Respectful Cultural Travel

Temple visits, heritage sites, village experiences, and local communities are approached with respect for dress codes, photography, timing, and local customs.

Practical Sustainability

We encourage realistic sustainability choices such as sensible routing, fewer unnecessary transfers, reusable water practices where available, and careful hotel selection.

Inclusive Travel Awareness

We support travellers with different comfort levels, mobility needs, dietary requirements, family needs, and travel styles through private, carefully planned itineraries.

Long-Term Local Commitment

As a Sri Lankan tour operator active since 2009, Elephant Travels aims to grow in a way that supports the destination, travellers, and local partners responsibly.

Community Support

Local communities matter to Sri Lanka’s tourism. Travel should support people beyond the major hotels, so we use local guides and drivers where suitable and include local restaurants, craft stops, village experiences, and small suppliers where appropriate.

Where possible, Elephant Travels supports community-focused initiatives and works with local partners who help connect travellers with Sri Lanka in a respectful and meaningful way. This may include village experiences, locally guided visits, small businesses, and community-aware travel planning, as well as support for selected rural school and community efforts where we are able to help.

Responsible Wildlife Tourism

Experiencing Sri Lanka’s wildlife is a privilege, and safaris should be planned responsibly. Our wildlife travel follows a few simple principles:

Our Position on Elephant Welfare

Ethical Wildlife Policy

  • Elephant Travels does not promote elephant-back rides.
  • Elephant Travels does not support wildlife experiences that harm animals or encourage cruel handling.
  • Elephant Travels does not promote performances or tourist activities that place unnecessary stress on elephants or other animals.
  • We prefer wildlife experiences that observe animals respectfully in natural settings, with proper distance and responsible guidance.
  • National park safaris, responsible wildlife observation, and carefully selected nature experiences are preferred over direct animal-contact activities.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a well-known attraction in Sri Lanka and may be of interest to some travellers. However, Elephant Travels encourages guests to think carefully about animal welfare and to choose wildlife experiences responsibly. The company does not promote elephant-back riding or activities that may cause harm or unnecessary stress to animals.

Because of the Elephant Travels name, some travellers assume the company promotes elephant activities such as elephant riding. This is not the case. The name reflects admiration for Sri Lanka’s wildlife and natural heritage — it does not mean support for elephant riding or harmful animal entertainment. We encourage respectful wildlife experiences that prioritise animal welfare, responsible observation, and ethical travel choices.

See how we apply this on our responsible wildlife travel in Sri Lanka.

Local Partners and Fair Travel Practices

Every journey is private, with your own chauffeur-guide and, where needed, licensed or suitably experienced local guides. We work with local suppliers and keep communication clear and fair throughout.

That means transparent planning, clear inclusions and exclusions, honest advice about what is and is not realistic, and practical support during your travels — so you always know what to expect and who to call.

Environmental Awareness

We aim to keep itineraries sensible and low-impact through practical choices rather than slogans:

Cultural Respect

Sri Lanka’s temples, heritage, and communities are living parts of daily life. We guide travellers to experience them respectfully:

Accessible and Inclusive Travel

Elephant Travels also supports travellers with mobility needs through private, realistic route planning. Accessibility in Sri Lanka varies by hotel, attraction, and region, so the company focuses on honest information, suitable hotels, and step-reduced routing where possible — see our accessible Sri Lanka tour planning.

We also support dietary and faith-based requirements, including kosher-friendly travel planning, arranged carefully and honestly around what each region can realistically provide.
