From the 8th Wonder of the World to secret surf breaks and whale-watching shores — the definitive guide to Sri Lanka's most extraordinary destinations.
1. Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Rising 200 metres from the jungle floor, Sigiriya is one of humanity’s most audacious architectural achievements. Built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD, the flattened summit holds the ruins of a royal palace with panoramic views across forest, reservoir, and mountains.
The climb involves 1,200 steps and passes ancient frescoes of celestial maidens painted directly on the rock face. Plan for early morning to beat the heat and crowds.
2. Temple of the Tooth Relic, Kandy
The most sacred Buddhist site in Sri Lanka — and arguably in the world — the Dalada Maligawa houses a tooth relic of the Buddha within a golden casket. Daily puja (offering) ceremonies draw pilgrims and visitors alike. The lakeside setting and golden rooftops make this one of Asia’s most photographed temples.
3. Yala National Park
Sri Lanka’s most visited national park holds the world’s highest density of wild leopards per square kilometre. Dawn game drives also yield wild elephants, sloth bears, mugger crocodiles, and over 200 bird species. The dry-season concentration (June–September) near watering holes offers outstanding sightings.
4. Galle Fort
The Dutch East India Company built this sea-facing fortress in the 17th century. Today it is a living UNESCO World Heritage Site and a highlight of most Sri Lanka cultural tours — its ramparts walked by locals and visitors, its lanes lined with boutique guesthouses, jewellers, cafés, and art galleries. Sunset from the lighthouse bastion is unmissable.
5. Ella
The most charming town in the hill country, Ella sits at 1,000 metres with valley views that stretch to the south coast on clear days. The Nine Arch Bridge — colonial-era viaduct framed by jungle — is Sri Lanka’s most photographed railway structure. Little Adam’s Peak is a short hike with grand views — one of many gentle walks on an active Sri Lanka adventure route. The town itself is vibrant and walkable.
6. Dambulla Cave Temples
Five ancient caves, sealed with granite boulders, contain over 150 Buddha statues and 2,100 square metres of cave murals. The complex dates to the 1st century BC and remains an active place of worship. Arrive early for cooler temperatures and golden light through the cave entrances.
7. Nuwara Eliya
Known as “Little England” for its colonial bungalows, manicured gardens, and cool climate. The surrounding Nuwara Eliya district produces some of the world’s finest Ceylon tea. Factory visits are fascinating, and the landscape of rolling green estates against blue hills is genuinely beautiful.
8. Mirissa
A crescent-shaped bay fringed with coconut palms, Mirissa is a favourite stop on a south coast beach holiday and Sri Lanka’s premier whale watching destination. Blue whales — the largest animals on Earth — feed off the southern coast from November to April. Spinner dolphins, sperm whales, and occasional blue whale calves are also sighted. Beach life and fresh seafood complete the picture.
9. Polonnaruwa
Sri Lanka’s second ancient capital (9th–13th century AD) is better preserved than Anuradhapura and easier to explore. The Gal Vihara — four Buddha figures carved directly from a single granite face — is among the most powerful works of religious art in Asia. The site is best explored by bicycle.
10. Arugam Bay
On the east coast, Arugam Bay is one of the top ten surf spots in the world. The bay’s consistent right-hand point break draws surfers from June to September. Outside of surf season, the area is peaceful, wildlife-rich, and far less visited — home to Kumana National Park and some of Sri Lanka’s most unspoiled beaches.
