It covers the great ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Kandy, the cool highlands and Ella, a wildlife safari, and Galle, before a longer, relaxed beach stay.

A longer holiday means fewer one-night stays and more rest days, which suits families travelling with younger children. The route keeps drives manageable and builds in highland and beach time to balance the touring.
The mix is deliberately broad — ancient cities, a rock fortress, tea country, the Ella train, a safari, and the coast — so children experience real variety rather than only temples. Activity choices depend on age, height, confidence, weather, and operator rules.
With several nights on the coast, the trip ends gently. Wildlife sightings are natural and not guaranteed, so the safari is planned around season and treated as a full nature experience.
The Itinerary
Your chauffeur-guide welcomes your family at the airport and transfers you the short distance to Negombo, or Colombo if your flights suit it. The first day is kept easy so children can rest before the journey begins.

You travel north into the Cultural Triangle, basing near Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s great first ancient capital. The drive is broken with stops, and you arrive with time to relax at the hotel.
Anuradhapura’s vast sacred city of dagobas, monasteries, and ancient reservoirs is spread across open parkland, making it easy to explore by vehicle with short walks — a relaxed way for children to experience ancient Sri Lanka. Cycling among the ruins is an option for older children.

The sacred Sri Maha Bodhi and dagobas are active places of worship; modest dress is required.
An early climb up Sigiriya Rock Fortress, or gentler Pidurangala for families with younger children, is followed by a relaxed village experience with a cart or boat ride and a home-cooked Sri Lankan lunch.

Pidurangala or a shorter Sigiriya visit suits families who prefer fewer steps.
A day of heritage and nature. Polonnaruwa’s well-preserved ruins are easy to tour with short walks, and resident monkeys keep children entertained; alternatively, or in addition, the Dambulla Cave Temple offers shaded caves of statues and paintings. An optional afternoon safari can be added in season.

A Minneriya or Kaudulla safari can be added, with elephants usually strongest from around July to September; sightings are not guaranteed.
You travel south toward Kandy with a stop at a Matale spice garden, an easy hands-on break for children, arriving in the lakeside hill capital in time to settle in.
A morning at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, dressed modestly, and the green open space of the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens. The afternoon stays flexible, with an optional Kandyan dance show in the evening.
You climb into the cool highlands, passing tea estates and waterfalls, with a tea factory visit to see how Ceylon tea is made. Nuwara Eliya’s fresh climate and gardens are a pleasant change for families.

A relaxed highland day around Gregory Lake, with pedal boats, parks, and gentle walks suited to children, plus the town’s colonial-era character. It is a welcome slower day in the middle of the tour.
Enjoy the famous hill-country train ride toward Ella through tea fields and mountain scenery; your guide meets you on arrival. Families who prefer to stay together can travel by private vehicle instead.

Ella offers the easy walk to Little Adam’s Peak, the Nine Arch Bridge, and nearby waterfalls. For older children a zipline can be arranged subject to age, height, and operator rules, while the pace stays relaxed.
You travel to a national-park region for a jeep safari — Udawalawe is excellent and reliable for elephants and well suited to families, while Yala or Wilpattu can be chosen depending on the route and season. Sightings are natural and never guaranteed.

From December to April we usually end on the south or west coast, such as Bentota, Galle, Weligama, or Mirissa. From May to September the east coast — Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda, or Arugam Bay — is often better. The beach region can be adjusted by season and your flight plan.
